So let us explain you in details.

In the recent past, a great way for SEO professionals to improve the ranking of a website was to create what we call backlinks.

Backlinks is when another website somewhere have a link on one or more pages directly pointing to your website. The word directly is important here as the link should be a real link and not some "referral like" link as : somewebsite.com/index.html?linktoyoursite=1234.

The more you had backlinks, the more Google loved you.

Some webmasters saw this and told themself: "Great! Let's offer backlinks to webmasters but, we'll ask them a link in return, so we'll increase our Google's love too!"

That's called reciprocal link.

In fact, thoses websites didn't gave you a link because your website is interesting, but because you gave them a link in return. That was a bit tricky.

But now, Google have resolved that. Why?

Because thoses links were not naturals. You can be at top of results searches because you have a great amount of backlinks, but your website may be not interesting for Google's researchers.

What Google did is to litterally cancel all reciprocal links. Now if you have a website linking your, but a link to this website on your website, the link is cancelled in the Google algorythm.
